What To Expect

Get ready for a fun and enriching journey for your students! Here are some tips and tricks to ensure your students’ Kidsfest experience is the best it can be:

Dressing right

Calgary weather is unpredictable. As many of the free activities are outdoors, we suggest informing your students to dress in layers and bring sunscreen and hats for sunny days. Please be advised that some activities involve the use of markers, glue, and other messy materials.

Finding your way around

Kidsfest has signage and a host of enthusiastic volunteers waiting to help you find your way around the Festival site. Look for Kidsfest volunteers to guide you, pull up our handy Festival Site Map, or visit the Kidsfest Welcome Tents on Olympic Plaza for directions and print maps.

Planning your day at Kidsfest

Plan on arriving to Arts Commons at least 20 minutes prior to the start of your show. Morning shows have staggered start times to space out group arrivals.

Participate in the Olympic Plaza activities before or after the show you are attending! Information on the 2018 outdoor activities will be available in March. Olympic Plaza activities open at 9:30 AM each school day. For groups coming on Wednesday, an opening ceremony will take place at 9:30 AM in the Jack Singer Concert Hall Lobby and you are invited!

Food and bringing snacks

If your group is attending more than one performance or activity we suggest bringing snacks.

Labelled lunch containers can be stored at the Kidsfest Information Tent on Olympic Plaza.

Forgot to pack a lunch? There are various restaurants and fast food vendors within easy walking distance of Arts Commons, including Ca’Puccini Café and Pita Express in Arts Commons, as well as Tim Hortons, A&W, Rosso Coffee, Second Cup, and Good Earth within a block’s walking distance of Olympic Plaza.

Lunches may be eaten outside on Olympic Plaza or Municipal Plaza. We also suggest the lovely green spaces above the City Hall parkade.

What happens if it rains?

If the weather is severe, most outdoor activities will be moved indoors to the Telus Rooms of the Telus Convention Centre. There will be information on Twitter (@yyckidsfest) about any location changes, and Festival team members will also give you directions on site.

Seating in the theatres

Seating in the Jack Singer Concert Hall, Max Bell Theatre, and Martha Cohen Theatre is assigned. Seating in all other festival venues is General Admission (not assigned.) Our Front of House professionals are aware of the large number of groups coming to enjoy the show and will strive to ensure school groups are seated together.

Your show venues all have washroom facilities and there are clearly marked public washrooms in the Centre Court area of Arts Commons. Portable toilets are available on the west side of Olympic Plaza.

Safety and first aid

MacCon Security is on site 24 hours per day during Kidsfest, as well as Site Crew and Kidsfest volunteers during the festival open hours. The Olympic Plaza site is fenced with entrances on each side of 8th Avenue SE. First Aid assistance is available on site during Kidsfest open hours. If someone in your group requires medical attention, please go to the First Aid Ambulance outside on 8th Avenue SE or inform a Kidsfest team member.
